Local Superheroes United! Record-Breaking 9thAnnual For Kids' Sake Superhero 5K
The 9th Annual For Kids’ Sake Superhero 5K held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 was a success by all measures! Hundreds of superheroes filled Turley Park to support kids in Bangladesh. For Kids’ Sake reached their $45,000 fundraising goal thanks to over 350 race registrants, the generosity of 50 local business sponsors and over 100 volunteers! Achieving this goal will help provide essential needs and education for children in Bangladesh.
The Superhero 5K brought together participants of all ages, with racers ranging from 3 to 83 years old. Many teams gathered at the starting line including those from NeuroRestorative Academy, Thomas Elementary School, Southern Illinois University Communications Department, and the Unity Point Cross Country team. The pilot “Zero to Hero” training program inspired over 50 Carbondale Community High School (CCHS) students to complete the race while local donors sponsored their run.
Carbondale’s Mayor Mike Henry formally addressed the crowd, highlighting that the race serves kids in Southern Illinois while supporting kids across the globe. The air was electric as the racers gathered at the starting line.
A crowd cheered for the runners when they raced past the finish line. An Award Ceremony acknowledged superheroes with the Best Costumes, including CCHS Principal Ryan Thomas and his Batman costume. Striegel Animal Hospital awarded the first-ever Best Super Dog Award.
The Brehm Preparatory School & OPTIONS team of students took home the Championship Team Fundraising Award. They raised over $8,000; enough to support a small For Kids’ Sake orphanage until next year’s event!
Trophies and prizes were awarded to the fastest runners. The overall fastest runner, 18-year-old Matthew Kovich, finished the 5K route in just 17 minutes and 30 seconds. The Carbondale Terriers Soccer team really took their Zero to Hero training seriously and won the award for Fastest Team.
All proceeds will provide life-saving resources to 550 orphans and 4,000 students in Bangladesh. Every runner, sponsor, and volunteer helped achieve the $45,000 event goal! Donations are still gratefully accepted at www.forkidssake.net to help close remaining $80,000 funding gap for the year.
