    Carbondale Community Arts is thrilled to present the inaugural Plate & Platter: National Juried Ceramics Exhibition at Artspace 304, in collaboration with Curator Stephanie Dukat and SIU Carbondale School of Art and Design Ceramics area
    This year is the first in a biennial national juried exhibition held at Carbondale Community Art’s Artspace 304 that honors the the long tradition of ceramic arts in Southern Illinois. Plate & Platter seeks to educate artists and art appreciators in our region about contemporary ceramic art practices on a national level, revitalizing the tradition established by the former Carbondale Clay Cup biennial exhibition hosted at the SIU University Museum.
    Juror Chandra DeBuse selected 40 works from 150 entries submitted by artists throughout the US for this exhibition of functional and sculptural ceramic plates and platters with innovative surface, form, function, and/or concept within the given theme.
    The exhibition is on view January 16 - February 22 at Carbondale Community Arts Artspace 304, with a public reception on Friday, January 25, from 5 - 7:30 PM. Juror Chandra Debuse will give an artist lecture starting at 6 PM, followed by exhibit award announcements and reception continuing until 7:30 PM.
    On Saturday, January 26  from 9 AM - 3 PM, DeBuse will present a demonstration focusing on plate and platter construction and ceramic surface decoration. The workshop will occur in the SIU Ceramics Area Studios on the SIU campus in the Pulliam Hall Industrial Wing.

    About the juror: Chandra DeBuse is a nationally recognized studio potter in based in Kansas City, MO. She received her MFA from the University of Florida in 2010. Her illustrated pottery has been featured in prominent magazines and publications including the books Humor in Craft, Graphic Clay and New Ceramic Surface Design. DeBuse has presented her work as a 2012 NCECA Emerging Artist, at SOFA Chicago, at the 2016 Utilitarian Clay Symposium at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and at the 2018 Alabama Clay Conference. She is a founding member of Kansas City Urban Potters. She has led over 50 workshops on designing illustrated pottery at art centers nationwide. For more about Chandra see ChandraDeBuse.com.
