• Boys & Girls Club announce winners of Family Awards

    On Thursday, November 29th the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale hosted their 7th Family Awards Night and Dinner to bring families together and announce the winners of the Mother, Father, Grandparent and Family of the Year Awards. One Hundred and three people were in attendance.
    The following were nominated for these awards by Boys and Girls Club staff:  Jeleania Fields (daughter Abigail Fields); Yolanda Harrington (daughter Nevaeh Harrington); and Irais Todaro (daughter Julie Todero) for the Mother of the Year award. Terrell Travis (children – Brayden and Brooklyn Tyrone’s Stepfather); Donald Whitby  (son Nathan Irby) and Alsharif Sharif (niece Rona Alraghi) were nominated for the Father of the Year. Grandparent of the year nominees were Lucinda Vinson (great grand-daughter Megan Curtis) and Ann Marie Schmidt (grandchildren Ethan and Natalie Reuter). Family of the Year nominee’s were the Scott, McDade and Leeks families. The evening started with a warm welcome from BGCC Youth Development Professional, Elycia Freeman. The Masters of Ceremony were Club Members Miles Showalter and Trinity Thompson. Each category was announced  followed by testimonials by children of each of the nominees and a BGCC staff member as to why each nominee should be the Mother, Father, Grandparent and Family of the Year.  This was a very close race with the winners being only a few votes from the runner’s up.  The winner of the Mother of the Year was Yolanda Harrington; Terrell Travis, Father of the Year; Grandparent of the Year was Ann Marie Schmidt, and Family of the Year was the Scott Family. The winners received beautifully framed certificates. Mother and Grandparent of the Year received a 30-minute massage from Allied Physicians and Rehab. Father of the Year received a gift card to Buffalo Wild Wings and Family of the Year received bowling passes to S.I. Bowl and a Family Swim Pack from the Carbondale Splash Park. Runner up’s did not leave empty handed they received tickets for the Boys and Girls Club Annual Chili Dinner and Community Christmas Fest, and SIU Bowling Alley game passes.
    The Boys and Girls Club would like to thank all those in the community that made this evening possible: Illini-Health Care for sponsoring the event.
