Bill Murray’s ‘Scrooged’ at The Varsity on Dec. 14.
“Scrooged,” part of The Varsity’s Holiday Flicks series, screens at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14.
This darkly comic, modern rendition of the Charles Dickens classic stars Bill Murray as Frank Cross, a cynical, mean-spirited television executive for whom no program is too outrageous to attract viewers. In his quest to increase his network’s ratings, he mounts a live production of “A Christmas Carol” on Dec. 24, forcing his staff to work through Christmas Eve.
That night Frank is visited by a series of ghosts who show him scenes from his past, present and future, giving him an opportunity to re-evaluate his actions and right the wrongs of his past. The visitations are, of course, successful, as Frank comes to realize that “It's Christmas Eve! For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be.”
The supporting cast includes Karen Allen, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, John Glover, Robert Mitchum and Alfre Woodard. And keep an eye out for cameos by Lee Majors, Mary Lou Retton, Jamie Farr, Robert Goulet, John Houseman, Miles Davis, Paul Shaffer, Buddy Hackett and Pat McCormick. Three of Bill Murray’s brothers also appear in the film: John Murray, Joel Murray and Brian Doyle-Murray, who plays Frank Cross’ father.
“Scrooged” is rated PG-13 for adult situations and language, violence.
