The Phonics will be headlining a New Year’s Eve R&B show at The Varsity.
There are many ways to say goodbye to 2018 and welcome 2019. But, why not welcome the new year by infusing your night and your life with a whole lotta soul and a great time?
The Varsity’s New Year’s Eve R&B Show will be headlined by fabulous Phonics. The Outlaw JoeC Wales band will also perform, along with other special guests. Sound Core Music & Video will also be showing performances by the late great Sharon Clark and Big Larry.
The Phonics, based in Cairo, offer up soul, funk, pop and Motown favorites such as Earth, Wind & Fire, the Gap Band, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. The group consists of original 1969 members Harry Williams on drums and vocals, Lee Carter on lead guitar and vocals, and Larry Woods on bass guitar. Other regular members are Wilma Carter on vocals, John Carter on keyboards, Julie Watkins on congas. The band is supplemented by a great horn section with rotating members that includes Shadi Frick and Chris Rigdon.
The show begins at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31. Tickets are $15 in advance at Sound Core Music & Video, 122 S. Illinois Ave., Carbondale, and online at www.thevarsitycenter.eventbrite.com
. A complimentary Champagne toast at midnight is included.
Tickets will be available at the venue only when doors open at 7. That’s also when the Varsity Bar opens, so come early and get in the spirit with wine, beer or a specialty cocktail.
