Carbondale’s Memorial Day Service will be held on Monday, May 27 at the historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
Ret. Maj. General Johnny R. Miller will be the keynote speaker. He has deployed twice: once in 2003, stateside, in support of Operation Noble Eagle and in 2009 as the senior liaison officer with the Polish Task Force White Eagle to Afghanistan. General Miller served on Active Duty in Germany with the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division from 1986-1989. General Miller’s military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal and Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (not worn). His professional military education includes U.S. Army War College where he earned a Master of Arts in Strategic Studies in 2007. General Miller earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Southern Illinois University in 1986.
Other participants include the Carbondale Police and Fire Honor Guard, Carbondale Preservation Commission, Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
The service will begin at 10 a.m. and will be held regardless of inclement weather. Seating is limited, so you are encouraged to arrive early.
